A Complete Guide to Knee Replacement Surgery: Recovery and Benefits

Are you currently suffering from chronic knee pain? If this pain is limiting your mobility and affecting your quality of life, it may be time to consider knee replacement surgery. At Victoria Orthopedic Center, our skilled and professional surgeons specialize in advanced orthopedic surgery, including knee replacement.

In our latest blog article, we explore what knee replacement surgery entails, the recovery process, and the life-changing benefits it can offer.

What Is Knee Replacement Surgery?

As you can imagine, knee replacement surgery, or knee arthroplasty, is exactly what it sounds like: a procedure designed to relieve pain and discomfort while restoring function in the knee. Specifically, the process involves replacing any damaged cartilage and bone in the knee with a prosthetic joint, which can be made from metal, plastic, or ceramic components.

Knee replacement surgery often results in improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing an individual’s quality of life. This type of surgery is generally recommended for those suffering from:

  • Severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint degeneration caused by aging or wear and tear
  • Knee injuries that have led to chronic pain and limited mobility

Different Types of Knee Replacement Surgery

There are two main types of knee replacement surgery: total knee replacement (TKR) and partial knee replacement (PKR).

Again, the names of these surgeries are straightforward. For example, during a total knee replacement surgery, the entire joint in the knee is replaced, including the surfaces of the femur, tibia, and patella (kneecap). A TKR is the most common type of knee replacement surgery, and it is highly effective for those suffering from extensive joint damage.

If damage is limited to only one part of the knee, then a PKR may be appropriate. This type of surgery preserves the healthy components of the knee joint while replacing only the damaged area. It likely doesn’t come as a surprise that a PKR results in a quicker recovery time and more natural joint movement.

Upon assessment, the surgeons at Victoria Orthopedic Center will be able to recommend the best option for you and your health.

The Knee Replacement Surgery Process

The knee replacement surgery process is rather routine, beginning with a consultation and ending with post-surgery recovery orders and limitations.

In detail, here is what to expect from start to finish:

  • Consultation—First, you’ll be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon, during which your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle will be assessed. Imaging tests may also be performed.
  • Pre-Surgery Prep—It’s important to ensure you’re fully prepared for surgery, which can include adjusting medications, performing exercises to strengthen your muscles, and arranging for care after surgery.
  • Procedure—Knee replacement surgery is performed under anesthesia and takes between one and two hours. As mentioned above, during the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon removes damaged tissue and bone and replaces it with prosthetic components.
  • Post-Surgery—You’ll be monitored in a recovery room before transitioning to physical therapy and rehabilitation.

At Victoria Orthopedic Center, our surgeons use the CORI Surgical System for total knee surgery.  CORI’s advanced smart mapping and real-time planning technology customizes your new knee joint to perfectly match your unique anatomy. This innovative approach minimizes surgical time and accelerates your recovery.

Recovery and Benefits

The recovery process is different for each individual, but in general, here’s what you can expect:

For the first couple of days or so, you’ll need assistance while walking, such as with a walker or crutches. You’ll need to closely monitor your wound care and pain management. Physical therapy will also be crucial to prevent stiffness and encourage movement.

Over the first few weeks, you’ll slowly be able to resume daily activities. You’ll need to continue to work with a physical therapist to strengthen your knee and improve your range of motion.

Full recovery can take anywhere between six and twelve months. Throughout this time, you’ll continue to see improvements in both your strength and mobility. You will also have follow-up appointments with your orthopedic surgeon to test your progress.

Knee replacement surgery offers life-changing benefits for those struggling with chronic knee pain and limited mobility. Some of the most notable advantages include:

  • Pain Relief
  • Improved Mobility
  • Enhanced Quality of Life
  • Long-Lasting Results
