The hip joint is the largest ball and socket joint in the body. Compared to the shoulder, it is more stable but has less range of motion. Pain free movements of the hip are necessary for many activities of daily living, including walking, sitting, transferring from sitting to standing, squatting and others. Pain due to hip pathology is usually located in the groin and can radiate to the thigh or knee region. Pain in the gluteal or buttock region may be reported as hip pain by some patients; however, this is usually coming from the back.
